The 7 Principles of Design
Module 2: The 7 Principles of Design
1: Balance
Balance in design creates a sense of stability. It can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial. Symmetrical designs offer formality, while asymmetry adds visual interest.
2: Rhythm
Rhythm in design leads the eye through a space. Repeating elements like color or shape creates flow and movement.
3: Harmony & Unity
Harmony ensures all elements in a space complement each other. Unity provides consistency and coherence across rooms.
4: Emphasis
Every room needs a focal point. Emphasis draws attention to that point, whether it’s a fireplace, a piece of art, or a statement wall.
5: Proportion & Scale
This principle is about how objects relate to each other in size. Large furniture in a small room can overwhelm the space.
6: Contrast
Using opposing elements such as light/dark, rough/smooth creates visual excitement and depth.
7: Details
Details include small design elements like trims, finishes, stitching, and ornamentation. These finishing touches can elevate a space from ordinary to extraordinary.
